Older Opeth is really heavy up until heritage (with the exception of Damnation). Mikael Akerfeldt's vocals are definately metal, but my point was whenever they come up in conversation at work someone inevitably asks "are they that band with the chick lead singer?"
Opeth is pretty interesting, the newer stuff has without a doubt mellowed out. I like a bunch of the older stuff but think the new stuff is different enough to stay at least interesting. I could only imagine what years of growling does to your vocal chords.
The mindless screaming in death metal/trash often seems to be me more like mental masturbation of being super hardcore. Not saying there aren't any good death metal & trash albums out there.. Many are put off for this reason I believe. Maybe that's why Opeth changed their direction?
Nobody who made actual death metal gave a f**k what people who didn’t like death metal thought. The point is the vocals were never the music in heavy metal and nobody who actually liked heavy metal for what it is cared too much about them. There’s always been screaming; heavy metal air raid siren vocals are far more piercing than death metal growls
Agreed. Death metal makes more sense in the niche that you describe. Something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy6ZW2HxY8k Have never been drawn to death metal tbh.
Yeah but they have unique voices. So does the Dismember guy. “Ieeem fierced tooo murder and storm here BY THE VISIONS INSIDE MY HEAD!” Ozzy can’t sing either but the vocals in metal pretty much got universalized in the mid to late 90s to be Cookie Monster, bathroom Satan voices, and lame bar rock singing. Nobody that can compete with Ian Gillian or Tom Angelripper types.
