@TomHP - yes, it is and I've acclimated to living in quiet. Lengthy exposure to noisy environments is torture for me now. The space could be NC15, mic preamp + A/D used had a little residual noise at the top end. Mic is ACO 7046 capsule on a Josephson C617 body.

@philipmorgan : well I do have some dialogue editing to attend, but good intentions of listening to "only one track" turn into 90 minutes and two albums later of time that just vaporized, blinking in astonishment across the sands of timmmmmme. Also those CS Solaris loaner measurements, while in progress are not getting finished as fast as they should. Apologies to @Vtory.

Quick q, because I've always been bad at this maths: if I'm being kind and assuming 18 bits of significant data in a 24bit stream, how much db of digital attenuation can I apply before I encroach on those 18 bits?

I mean, to hear the 21st bit at its intended volume peaks have to be at what 126db? More with dithering. I like my ears too much these days so the LSBs are lost no matter what.

Maybe there's info in the 21st because peaks are very low but eh, attn. is done in fp64 anyway, so it mostly works out for those times when you do want digital attn.

The worst is reading some of the usual BS and being so disillusioned that you can't be bothered even refuting it any more. And thats how the endless myths continue re-perpetuating. Even after you supply measurements that objectively refute the claims - you still get the same old "but I trust my ears"

My enjoyment of particular recreational music systems is inextricably intertwined with my personal preferences. The following lists are representations of my tastes in music, components and listening levels. The section on music is only a sample of my library but should provide sufficient insight into my musical preferences. I am rigorous and exacting with component measurements. That doesn’t automatically make my opinions worth anything without context. Use the following information to decide how well your own preferences converge or diverge with mine when I make comments about equipment in the forum. DO NOT blindly assume a positive comment from me about some component or headphone will automatically translate to auditory happiness on your part. Likewise you may find yourself enjoying something that I don’t. Consider (learning) your own personal preference.

90~100 Santana Black Magic Woman / Gypsy Queen, ELP Tank - drum solo

I tend to listen at quieter levels where electroacoustic transducers exhibit greater linearity. Higher levels are more likely to have greater distortion and require higher power amplification. The result is substantial deviation in opinions by listeners attempting to compare headphones when they are listening at different levels.
