Tried that for a bit, didn't help very much for my case. What I do is I just tinker with colour balance and brightness, or close my eyes and walk away from screens when it gets to be too much.
You might have more suitable eyes (?) for those though. Ask if they have a sample un-graded set. You'd be surprised what asking nicely might get you, especially for smaller, mom n' pop glasses stores.
I do take relatively frequent breaks. The big issue is that my studies mean that I stare at a screen for hours at a time, not counting video games. A lot of the times I just feel like shit after, and it's getting worse. Eyes are not happy and don't feel good.
*Edit: Found the blue light filter on Windows. I'll see if that helps.
Make sure you don't have a screen that has PWM, some people react poorly to that as well. My Benq has a low blue light mode and no pwm, can stare at this screen all day without problems.
Usually you can just use software designed for the task, such as redshift or f.lux. The nice thing about those is you can schedule the color temperature changes.
Another way would be to make a color profile with a different white point. Typically it starts at 6500K; I always set mine to 5500K (~sunlight) for doing photo work. At sunset, f.lux changes it to 2700K (tungsten).
Yes. Buy some. I used f.lux for years and it helps. I reduced monitor brightness and ditched one with PWM. Both helped. Grabbing a $40 pair of Gunnar glasses was the biggest improvement. Took a couple of weeks to get used to but they're great.
