I'm mean, i'm sitting here right now listening to Deacon Blues, and Dan Fagan's minor speach impediment is so goddamn distracting I just want to scream, "WHAT THE f**k IS WRONG WITH YOUR MOUTH???"
but what about it makes it 10/10 type stuff? E.g. I listen to something like OK Computer or Trout Mask Replica, and despite how crazy (at the time) they are, you can hear how forward-looking they were (and they suck you in to the composition!). AJA just sounds like boring time-wasting drivel. No new ideas, just studio hijinks of the most pedestrian type.
Aja does not do much for me either. Can't Buy a Thrill is my fave, but it's not like SD really rocks out anytime anyway. Even their most upbeat stuff - Hey 19, Kid C, Do it Again, could bring on OK Boomer at the dental office. That said, Fleetwood Mac was here last week, and while I didn't go I know it still attracted a big Gen Z and later crowd who loved it.
it wasn't always like this, but as i get old and grumpy, i just don't bother with 2nd listens to anything that doesn't hook me in some way the 1st time around. life is too short and there's too much good music out there to waste time trying to figure out what they were smoking when they reviewed Aja.
