Had the same thing happen and brought it into a service center. Turns out the tube socket was wack for me.

I switched the tubes and it switched channels, so seems to be tube for me.

Hmm actually now im not sure, all of a sudden I get the static in the other ear...

My HD250 are even harder to tell, they are perfectly symetrical

The prob with the 800 is not symmetry but that the design actively convinces you to put them on backwards.

Yeah me neither but the evidence is in the numerous ad pictures and show pics on the internet (even on Sennheiser website!)

HD800 is simple. If you can /see/ 'L' and 'R' when holding them in front of your face, you know you are about to put them on right.

(Assuming they are not upside down, of course. Chin-phones, anyone?)

I would love to see some pics of people accidentally wearing them as chin-phones
