The bass is all there, and in greater quantity in the midbass than most planars. The distortion in some ways actually makes the sub-bass more audible because of the octave-doubling, though less clean and tactile. If you can get past the 'fluffiness' of it, it's totally tolerable and never an active annoyance IME.
@E_Schaaf no kidding. It isn't bothering me at all, and it is a different flavor than the HD600, which I also have. Why most headphones are too heavy for my head, bleh.
I try to think about which part of the voicing a headphone 'drives from' before I mod - where the dynamic energy and focus seems to emerge from within the spectrum. For the 6xx/650, it's the lower mids - more fullness and body to it. For the 600, the upper mids - more 'pop' and 'snap'. All have a mild spotlight effect, the outsides of which will fade and 'feather' out (to use a lighting term).
Probably just a matter of a single driver reproducing the entire audible spectrum, and the effect of psychoacoustics I wish I had studied harder about when I was in recording school...
Student loans mean I literally can't afford to live unless I'm making consistent and fairly high income for someone of my age. Upscale provides that, even though I don't always love the work. I don't want to be working retail forever, though I have found it to be a valuable education beyond my education.
So far @Psalmanazar I'm not getting any of the wonky stuff, however, I just got it today so it will take me a while to figure out the true sound sig of the HD6xx.
Obviously @E_Schaaf specializes as the underwear salesman to pay the bills.
I went away from the 650 because I'm struck by curiosity and luckily had this forum to belp guide my 'to audition' list, and made purchasing decisions after. It still gets used however.
