Haha, speaking as someone whose family doesn't keep fresh milk and defaults to the powdered stuff, the main reason is convenience (it keeps for *much* longer than actual milk) and the ability to match consistency to preference. Milk is high-calorie and most powdered makes are fortified with vitamins as they're popular in poorer countries where malnutrition runs rampant. Probably prepping for long-term hermitage.
Also, popular advice hereabouts (can't speak for elsewhere) is to stay clean to prevent the spread of the SARS CoV-2 strain responsible forCOVID-19, ergo sanitation products becoming scarcer than silk.
We couldn’t even buy toilet paper and tissue in the past 4 days here in Japan. I had to stand in line this morning for 2 hours to finally get 1 pack. And people are selling toilett papers on yahoo auction for 20-30x of the regular price...
The stuff I read says that soap and water is as good as anything else for protection and should be used often. So don't worry that the shelves are out of the fancy stuff.
@Lasollor... Toilet paper is a thing in Japan? Since I moved to India, I find it one of the most disgusting things to be reminded of when I visit UK.
Mind you, in this situation, the piece of toilet paper one uses has one advantage: it hasn't been touched by the previous crapper(s). But then, that's just another wash-hands-well thing.
@Thad E Ginathom Combination of western type toilet with remote controlled bidet function(you can select the strength and temperature of the water) AND toilette paper is standard in modern buildings in Japan. (We have this at home) But many old houses with older toilets doesn’t have the bidet function so they use toilette paper.
