The retro game community is abuzz about the $750 Retrotink 4k, but in the context of audio gear, getting best-of-breed for $750 is amazing! Dec 1, 2023

Lyr 1 really likes 1974 and 1975 Voshkods. My other headphones really like the Lyr 1 with said tubes. Really dialing into the differences

Constructive feedback for Schitt...The True Multibit cards would be so much more compelling if they used Unison or SPDIF. As is, I'll pass.

I think that is my biggest issue with the fully loaded Ragnarok 2 as a prospect for me. If I could run a pi2aes to it I would love one for my living room.

It's good for a utility feature, but I think the performance overall of the USB input would hurt the chain downstream. I'm contemplating a Lyr 3 and I'd rather just ship my DAC's in for Unison installation than get the card installed.

Is there a tube that makes Lyr 3 work with a stock, unmodded HD800? Enough to tame the brightness and keep the speed? Or deadend here?

Question...when people talk about the mids "sucked out" on Elear, are we talking lower or upper (2-4 khz)? Is it a "dark" headphone? Thx
      1. nishan99
        nishan99
They meant the upper. idk if it's dark or not. but Focals have such sharp leading edge that's satisfying even if it's dark. Other rounder edges such as Hifiman egg shaped phones need brighter tuning to be "balanced" or satisfying.

I bought one before hearing it, just after they were released (bad idea) and for me the "suck out" manifested in being unable to find a satisfying volume level. I didn't find it to be a dark headphone.

Fidelizer is the source addition we need but don't deserve. I can't believe the difference using it vs not using it (USB to a MB Bifrost1)

Maybe this Fidelizer has a tube emulating DSP and/or a pleasant U shape EQ by default? How would thread priortization and the like get "huge" differences otherwise?

I will bet you a taco that something like a Pi2AES or Digione Signature is much better yet than USB and whatever OS or software tweaks you try on the BF1 MB.

I'm not disputing there are better solutions, I'm saying I'm very pleased with the NOTICEABLE reduction in harsh digital noise and increase in openness and musicality from a program I decided to run on a whim and didn't cost me anything.

Recommendation? Tube amp with recessed mids (1khz - 4khz). Lyr 1 played nice with my tinnitus, but looking to upgrade. Lyr 3? Vali2?

I find I need relaxed sound, super aggressive bright sounds flairs up my tinnitus. That said I don't imagine a Lyr 3 would be a problem and you can tune it to your liking. Get a westinghouse 6SN7 reliatron from the start and call it a day.

Rediscovering the HD800 (No S). Liking it for compressed, closed in metal. Really dissects the mids nicely. MB Bifrost w Fostex A8C = decent

Opinions on Steve Guttenberg and his Youtube reviews? He reviews some interesting gear. Wondering where he falls within the SBAF sphere.

Strong agree with above. Guttenburg is vastly better than the recent spate of under-30 audiophile youtubers, plus he has this this slightly-tempered-by-age maniac spirit of a former beatnik.

If it doesn't have to be a thin bar, riva products are pretty solid for one-mass speaker.

I replaced my Vizio sound bar with my smaller Sony XB40 speaker (direct connection, not bluetooth) and the comparison is unfair. Smaller soundstage, as expected, but way better sound. Same source/DAC. I really need my Audioengine speakers back. :(

I'm liking the Mozart Symphonies by Frans Bruggen and the Orchestra of the 18th Century at the moment, they are just a pain to find! I love the sonics on most Telarc CD's, I'm looking forward to getting Yoel Levi doing Scenes at an Exhibition. Lastly, stocking up on releases with Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

It seems a well-known limitation that you can only enable EQ when using SBC codec, not with LDAC for instance. I guess this may be down to lack of DSP power to do both simultaneously (or the latency would get too big, although that might not be such an issue for listening to music). Too bad.

Also too bad that support for global system-wide EQ is not standard for all Android devices. AFAIK the only way to do this consistently is by rooting.
