Can you elaborate? I am Roon-curious but cheap.

@Boops Discover feature is where Roon metadata shows you different albums of the day depending on random things like label, album release on this day, certain artist, etc. Best way to explain is you are too lazy to look at your CD shelf and deciding which album you wanna play. Discover kind of takes the thinking part away from your brain.

I have discovered more music from Roon that I ever did without. That plus all the meta data, DSP features, multi room, consolidation of all my music along with streaming services, etc - it’s awesome.

Did you all spring for the lifetime membership? Or do you go month to month?

Started out monthly but then purchased lifetime. Price is I think very high right now, but due to Roon I’m 80% digital now

@Boops I'm only doing once a year since the $699 lifetime is too much. Also, you never know if something that might be better/different for me down the road. I don't mind losing out in the long run by doing it once a year, but I think $119/yr is worth it for me. I haven't been using UPnP that much since getting Roon (but I can run on both setups, UPnP/Roon).

Also @Boops digital is the future for me, all my CDs are in a few cardboard boxes and I have a good Pioneer CD Transport that I haven't touched since getting PI2AES and on the Roon bandwagon.

Yeah I’m on the yearly as well - works out to $10/month, which is nothing compared to what I used to spend on new music. I consider Roon + Tidal as one thing essentially now that pretty much gets me all the music I want and helps me find new stuff. I haven’t spent any more money on new music in a while now.

thanks all for the info. I still buy and play CDs, but I also have the Pi2AES with an attached thumb drive. I have Volumio setup on the Pi, but I hate the garbage UI, so I mostly just play CDs or Airplay to the Pi with Apple Music for streaming things I don't own. I like Roon for the UI and the blending of local and streaming, but I don't use the streaming services Roon integrates with so it's hard to justify.

@booos agreed, if you use other streaming services it’s likely not worth it just for the better UI for your local files.

@Boops do you use BubbleUPnP? I prefer that UI by leagues more than the UI on these Pi Oses and just use the PI2AES as an UPnP Render.

Yeah BubbleUPNP is my favorite UPNP remote app. Very good UI.

No iOS BubbleUPNP app though, which would be a prob for me since I switched to iPhone.

I don't use UPnP but it sounds like it's comparable to what I'm doing from a conceptual point of view: Apple Music and the Music app on iOS as the remote/source → AirPlay → Pi2AES as renderer of the AirPlay stream. Am I understanding that right?

I've been paying the Apple Tax so long it's like breathing air at this point.
