Started off listening to a new track a few times just on my iPhone speaker. Then sat down at my rig and put the HD800S on my head to listen… Apr 17, 2024 at 10:42 AM

      It’s amazing how the removal of a midbass hump/peak can change the entire character of a transducer (a speaker in this case).

        No wonder. I was honestly a little confused because I didn't think any BBC monitors or variants need such massages. Now I can see a more complete story.

        The Grahams are a bit bumped through that region as well, although possibly a room mode likely related to the port on each, because the ATCs (sealed) in the past and the Buchardt S400 now (passive radiator) don’t exhibit this. With the Grahams however it’s just perceived as a bit more warmth and some excess on certain notes, not sleepy or dark sounding.

        I think I read somewhere where KEF's are designed with stone walls in mind and with American sheetrock construction, it is best to use the foam in the bass port. I think this also removes the midbass hump. I know my Q300's in my room I liked them with the foam.

      Can anyone point me to recommended EQ curve setttings for HD650? Was just looking at the new iFi amp thread and realized I could EQ w/ Roon!

        650 doesn’t take EQ all that well. But if you want to try, I used to do something like this:
        Filter 1: LowShelf, 45Hz, Q=1.2, G=+4dB;
        Filter 2: Bell, 150Hz, Q=1, G=-3dB.

        My specific unit had a peak at 5.5kHz. So I did a Filter 3: Bell, 5.5kHz, Q=2, G=-3dB.

        Personally I don't think 650 responds to eq very well. (sr1a is the best regarding this, planars mostly decent, dynamics usually trickier). My own rule of thumb is not to apply any boost below resonance frequency (80-90hz for hd650 as far as I remember).

        Much easier way for the life: sell it to me! lol

        @RobS let me ponder with the idea. A full film psu would be a start and better filtering. Some precision bypass caps with copper foil with really low ESR outputs. But then it's a high end amp...for the HD650 mostly.

        OTL all the way! Decware CSP3 is the best I've heard with HD650. The tone is dark, but somehow it still manages to have wonderful microdetail. My educated guess (based on experience with the ZD series and HD600) is that ZDS would easily beat it due to its far superior staging. Best luck!

        Roon's DSP engine is pretty neat. I have parametric EQ settings for my HD600 and HD650 which I enjoy. I do use volume leveling for my zones. It's not perfect but, does work well.

        Luckily in the headphone space, yeah there are tons of great folks on here who have heard a ton of shit and who can be trusted (or at least understood as far as preferences). And of course, many do their own measurements.

        2-channel stuff is not as common though, but still would trust SBAFers over most mags on that too.

        I watch or read reviews just see how full of crap some reviewers can be and see if they will ever break from their normal bias. Checking to see Steve Guttenberg dislikes a product for the first time, remembering Zreviews has terrible tastes, gauging how sensitive Josh Valour is to treble, if DMS can ever maintain consistency in his work/format and figuring out if John Darko is talking about the device or food.

        Honestly, published measurements are more or less not that informative to me. Sensittity not bad (good measuring speakers sound ok at least), but terrible specificity (idiosyncratic measuring speakers do wonder pretty often). Impedance curve is the most helpful resource imho.
