Odd. Come to think of it, I don't think I ever owned one. Went from 78s to 33 LPs. Maybe because I skipped the pop singles of the sixties. And the few years gap between the death of the Radiogram and my parents buying me a record player.
I wasn't aware that 45s existed other than 3-minute singles. 7-inch, right? What records are you playing?
@Thad E Ginathom Full albums are now being released on 45 RPM for the better sound quality. This is a relatively new audiophile phenomenon and you are right that for the majority of the time 45 RPMs were used for singles.
Whole albums on a 12" 45?? Wow, new album releases must be getting shorter - I remember the avg LP being around 40-45 mins (hence my buying so many blank C90s). Anything less was seen as a ripoff, but squeezing much more onto two 33 RPM sides required reducing the bass level (another problem that CDs were supposed to solve...).
@Thad E Ginathom 45 RPM does two things: Reduces or eliminates IGD and because you’re putting less music on per side, there’s less compression of the grooves. So not quite the same thing as tape speed.
@Biodegraded The albums aren’t getting shorter, whole albums on 45 require 2-3 discs to fit all the music. Hence there only being 7-13 minutes per side.
Yep, we're seeing some full albums on 12" 45, and also seeing a decent number of 20 minute EPs released that way. My personal favorite though is my copy of Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, which switches between 45 rpm and 33 rpm on each side of a double album spanning 4 records.
