Roon works for me most of the time, but without plugin support JRiver will always have its place

Roon feels like a next gen music player without a doubt. I just can't stomach the price even though I understand what I get. JRiver also lets me remotely access my music files when I'm away from my home network. I can't pay top dollar for Roon until they offer similar functionality.

Couldn't agree more. Roon radio is amazing, the metadata is amazing, but the closed ecosystem and being tied to your home is not amazing.

Being able to use Roon away from your home network I think has been a consistently requested feature for quite a long time. Hopefully they’ll figure it out and offer it at some point in the not too distant future. I agree would be nice, but I can use the Tidal app in the meantime (of course no access to music stored at home, and lacking other Roon niceties).

@rlow I have Apple Music and Qobuz which are both useful but I've spent a lot of time, energy, and money tracking down my preferred masterings for the bulk of my collection, and very few of those masterings have made their way onto any streaming service. So having an easy to use remote option is a must for me.

I worked around it by setting up a VPN connection to my house - which works fine, but it's really not something a non-IT person could do.

-1 Roon. Closed api, expensive, who's curating that music/playlists/suggestions. It's pretty & blinds you, they are borrowing plllllenty of open source code/ideas already out there.
