Are there posts explaining what the firmware does to cause a sound change? I found the main firmware promotion post and it just says "improves sound", which I am quite skeptical of.
I tried it when they first became available but couldn't be sure of any difference. Given it's not really possible to A/B simultaneously I am pretty sceptical of most impressions.
The people working on the firmwares are also people who swear by upgrading the internal cabling in the device. I'm not quite at that level of audio perception... So YMMV.
Its entirely possible to alter sound via fw
During sony Ericsson days we had a tool "Far Manager". Used that to flash different set of audio drivers to 2 units of K750i and a W800i. Sony warm organic dsp was built in some of those drivers. The two K750i with diff FW we flashed had varying loudness and sound signature
