The upgrade from any previous version is around $20 if you buy the upgrade early. Version 27 was just announced. Current upgrade is $19.98. JRiver forum has info. Upgrades happen about once a year. It's essentially a $20 per year subscription to stay current.
Have MC20, 22 and 25 on two Win7 and one Win10 laptops. Other than some non-audio feature additions I don't perceive any audible differences. Maybe @Hammy could provide additional details.
JRiver v26 added HDCD support which is an audible improvement for HDCD titles with peak extend or gain. I consider JRiver mature software that doesn't change much from version to version but cumulatively the changes do add up.
