Anyone tried AK4191 + AK4499EX DACs? I think AKM might be onto something here. Mar 25, 2024 at 3:24 PM

@gixxerwimp they've actually improved the bass/mid integration by lowering the crossover. But stuff like soundstaging was unusually bad. I'm starting to suspect that the UA interface might've been to blame as well. Or maybe I'm getting spoiled.

Were they dsp-d for room as well?
Ime the old Class-AB egg monitors imaged better than the newer Class-D with the dsp crapp, and imaging went actually worse with room corrections active. Depth of soundfield took a dump.

@Priidik , yeah GLM was there as well. On/Off, I preferred it enabled because it negated SBIR bass boost. But damn, I kinda expected them to take more than one measurement. Correcting from a single point is a lottery. With GLM ON the soundstage was better as lows were pushed back and mids had more room to work, but damn... the sound was very unnatural. I had very high hopes for the coax driver.

It's because head tracking is shit for gaming unless it's VR. Then it's a necessity. I'd wager this is a product slated below Mobius and meant to be less of a niche product meant for the everyday gamer? *Checks Audeze site* Yup, seems that way.

Depends on the game. Most of the issue is that good head tracking is expensive and awkward, so only simulators bother with it.

Flight/space/driving sims are awful without it. So is ARMA tbh.

But there's no standard, open protocol for it, and all the good ones are like 150+bucks, so very few games support it.

Also the tracking on the mobius isn't good.

I’m pissed off too man. There’s Dayton drivers in many of the newer speakers. Many are using worse drivers than KRK. KRK just has the awful Chinese plate amps based around warmpuke TI/BB chip amps. Gibson owned and fragile as hell.

I bet there is more than 'puny phase linearity'. Compression driver dynamics and ridiculous-tech motors in the one you preferred. Even the amps would probably tip the scales to the favored.

@Priidik the speaker I compared them to is still a prototype, so I bought the one which was available. The prototype had 4x 5W430 midwoofers and a much cheaper compression driver, so it wasn't THAT over the top. The amp still was Hypex FA253. The one I bought is leagues better...

The thing about hobbies is there's a relative dearth of research into it outside of, say, gaming as an addiction that's relevant in modern context. What irked me about the article was that it's revealing of how very pop culture mental health issues have become.

Also, irritation not directed at you earlier, @crenca. Mostly grumpy cuz article and scalp sore :))

@Lyander I get your response on trivializing serious psychological issues, however I don't think that the author was doing so. He was merely using the simplified description of the illness to point out several phenomena in the hi-end community he finds morbid. At least my takeaway isn't that everyone there has OCPD.

@philipmorgan I have tried Troels' filter tricks for my own speakers, with similar drivers. The sound is perhaps a bit dark, with a gentle downward slope. I kind of like this. Some time ago he used to put effort to suppress all the crap from the midrange/bass breakups, so it might end up a bit dull. Latelly there are more 1. order filters and simple stuff that is bound to be more lively.
