I wish these Vanatoos accepted an analog signal without digital re-conversion. The internal DAC is probably the weakest part of the system. Mar 20, 2024

@famish99 Maybe I shouldn't have just said soldering. I'm not building anything, I'm not that intelligent or confident. I just resoldered a cable to correct the polarity coming out of my DBX processor. I've never soldered before because it was intimidating to me.

Not much a cable person myself, but it seems likely cables may not require breaking in the same way other components might? Might be the case that you've just adapted to minor differences over time?

The layer of oxide thing has been proposed as a possible reason why a change between two cables that should have no difference genuinely appears to make one. It is even suggested that we plug/unplug/clean plugs and sockets.

Another suggested reason is that one didn't (with speakers) put one's head in exactly the same place after making the change. Inches can matter! ...

When I listened to the sample, it sounded different and off compared to how my microphone normally sounds. So I inverted the track in Audacity and by doing so the polarity was correct again and it sounded normal. If you guys are interested, I can post the two tracks so you can see if you can hear the difference.

I bought a pair of straight wire a while back and picked up a pair of snake oil a week or so ago (when they ran out of the straight wire). They’re both fine. But I also can’t say I’ve heard any differences in sound between different interconnects (xlr or otherwise).

HD650 upgrade: better amp and DAC. Mods. Anything else will have at least one trade-off. I'm making it a goal to bring an exclusive option to SBAF before year's end, though. TH900 drivers with custom rear-horn vented cups and extended baffle, OEM pads and headband, should be obtainable around $1k-$1.5k

Also a well modded HE5 or HE6 could be worthy contenders as HD650 upgrades but hard to find and still some trade-offs.

@E_Schaaf Your mods have been looking quite promising, so I'll wait and see what your custom 900 ends up being. Already been down the modding route with 650s, ended up disappointed. Yeah, modded HE6 was on my mind for a while and I almost bought one, then I remembered about its power/amp requirements.

Is it just normal for dynamic drivers to sound more punchy/full compared to planars even when they have the same mid bass quantity?

Thank you for the information. I ask because I recently acquired an LCD2C w/ vegan pads and I'm quite disappointed with their bass performance. Makes me appreciate my HD650s a lot more.

Are the vegan pads faux leather, or something more air permeable? I forgot to say that pads make just as much difference as how open/closed the cup is.

If I'm looking at the correct pads, they're leather-free microsuede.
The 650s bass distortion is probably helping in this regard as well.

It's not a perfect solution it seems. There is a quiet but still audible popping or clicking noise in either the left or right channel every so often. It's not bad enough to disregard using this method, but it's still a fault of this setup and something you would just have to deal with. At least for my set up, it is.

Crazy. I have no idea why it would work from the Switch, but not from my Oppo into Yggdrasil. I tried all outputs and settings on box and player too.

That's unfortunate. I wish I could help but I have zero experience with the Oppo and you have probably tried everything already. Using it with the Switch isn't perfect though, it seems every now and then there will be a quiet but still audible pop or click in either the left or right channel. Not annoying enough to ruin the whole experience but it's still there.
