Analytical are they? Interesting...yeah hadn’t really picked that up from other reviews. Are you using nearfield or some distance away in a room?

Standard nearfield in very well treated room, equi triangle about 78 inches. they just have no soul, no warmth and you have to crank them to get any bass, which they do have. Stark!

Ouch! Maybe a synergy thing? The UB5, especially the original model, were quite low sensitivity with an impedance dip below 4 ohms. A pretty serious amp required to keep them happy. What were you running them with?

Guttenberg? There's nothing he doesn't hype. I think I prefer Rafe to Guttenberg. I can scarcely believe I put prefer and Rafe next to each other in a sentence!!!

Not synergy-240 watts available from Bel Canto, 4 ohm load not a problem, they just suck. And it's the ytube guys too, NRD, Zero, Tharbamar, Audio Joe, etc. I really think maybe decades of Bose cubes have skewed expectations of what is good.

Any other passives you’ve tried that you find a lot better for nearfield?

I almost think ~$600 is no man’s land for bookshelf speakers. Maybe DIY is a better option in the under $1200 realm.

@rlow- My single driver DIYs that have been heavily EQ'd for my main setup. Was going to sell them but cannot find anything to replace them. My older SP Tech monitors were also great. For a desk, the PSB Alphas are very good.

Funny I was going to ask if you’ve heard the Alpha’s. The new ones are well reviewed and ASR panned them, so they must be decent ;-)
