Hallelujah is a song of reflection of life gone by. A song of love found and then lost. With some some hallelujah sex in-between. It is a song of celebration and mourning. But mostly it is mourning and reflection. It is not a celebration of the future. It is a reflection on the past.
In the same vein, the song "Dance Me To The End Of Love" is not a song to be played at a wedding. It is more appropriate for a wake. It is a song about prisoners in the Nazi death camps being marched to the gas chamber while other prisoners played violin music. It is a song that should never be played at a wedding and danced to as a new couple. Do those people understand the lyrics and meaning?
The wikipedia article about the song explains the meaning: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_Me_to_the_End_of_Love
Leonard Cohen has also explained the meaning of the song in interviews. The song is about meeting the very end of life on unpleasant terms. Why would anyone play that at a wedding?
I often wonder if anyone actually listens to the lyrics and spends a few minutes researching before selecting music for an event. Foo Fighter’s “Best of You” is also often misused.
What triggered my reaction was hearing "Hallelujah" sung during the DC COVID memorial service. They should know better than that. It's not a hymn. It's a secular song about sex. Some of those hallelujahs are orgasms.
