Simplicity of the circuit I’m assuming? I wouldn’t touch the pre on an HT receiver unless I absolutely had to.

Also, maybe a silly question, but it’s not a phono pre is it? Because that could be applying an RIAA curve which would absolutely have an effect on the sound. I know several HT receivers still have built in phono pre capabilities is why I ask.

@Merrick Not a phono pre. Feeding SYS from Onkyo's pre-out with all sources behind the Onkyo. Holy cow... sounded like mush (relatively speaking + some hyperbole).

Does the Onkyo have a direct audio mode? If so, is that something you can engage in this scenario?

@Merrick it has a direct mode (tone controls bypassed) and also pure audio (bypasses any video signal, turns off display, bypasses tone control). I've tried 'em all. Good thing Vidar is on order. :-)

I’m not surprised. HT receivers are Swiss Army knives, great utilities but a specialized tool will always beat the general use tool equivalent on the do it all device.

@Merrick Agree. A toaster oven doesn't do toast as well as a toaster, and it can't bake a pie like a full-sized oven. :-)
