85dB is standard for movie theater dialogue which is normally mixed to average around -25dBFS in the digital domain, so theoretically there's headroom to 120dB. Ear splitting to me is 95dB+, hopefully not for extended periods. Avg for me is 75-80.

It's too subjective. I can't stand anything above 90dB continuous.

@nishan99 @spwath @E_Schaaf Fascinating stuff. >=90dB was interesting but lasted 10 seconds. Haha...In my room, I think <=85dB is PLENTY. Thanks folks!

For me, 85+ is uncomfortable in both temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and in dB SPL. For parties I always bring ear plugs.

@ChaChaRealSmooth So true! When I bring the family to Dave and Busters, I found earplugs help tremendously in the game area.

My colleague, who worked at Bell Labs for 26 years, cited internal reserach where their threshold of concern began at 80 to 82 dB SPL. I've always preferred 73 average 83 peak for 2 channel, and 68 avg to 78 peak for headphone listening.
