As always, intelligible lyrics remain the bane of vocal music. Said this before, but I wish I didn't understand English so I could enjoy a wider scope of content without being distracted by meh lyrical content.
@E_Schaaf I find I can suspend lyrical disdain at certain moments. But it's always a shock to the system when I snap back in and begin to process the words I am hearing. It's that wince line, man. Metal has a lot of that too. If the sound itself breaks gaze for a second, it hits me like a camera flash.
The older I get, the more instrumental of all genre I listen to. I think experience/maturity has alot to do with it - I'm just not that moved or interested in the emotive navel gazing and that which tends to impress > 30 year olds...
I think the reality is that a lot of music gets hype these days because (young) people find the singer relatable. Clairo, Soccer Mommy, Snail Mail, Phoebe Bridgers, etc.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but it more has to do with the personality and personal reactions to music then the actual music sometimes. Eh I mean, as long as people are enjoying themselves.
