Only sort of. Good taste of hifi for midfi price. I've heard 103R on bigger rigs and it falls a bit flat/doesn't scale like HD6xx. Besides, we're talking about two different ends of the playback chain so it's hard to differentiate between source and output device even though there are similar technologies (magnets, coils) being used.

There's also the interplay between arm and cartridge to worry about. Hang a 103R on a Rega table and you're bound to be met with disappointment.

Yeah, agreed about them not being the equal of mid/higher-end stuff. But, like the HD6XX, they do have a passionate modding community/cottage industry that feels they can be taken higher with tweaking. And they're an almost universal recommendation for bang for the buck.

Just been messing around with a DL103R and alternately quite liking it and feeling, like the Senn, that it can be a bit wooly on the low end. Not the last word in detail, at all, but, also like the Senn, it gets the tonality basically right.

I'd like to hear the Zu DL103R or even what Anamighty Sound does with the cart. Or perhaps a more advanced tip than the conical from one of the re-tippers out there.

I'd love be able to borrow a Zu before committing. Very interested to hear since, I agree, DL103R gets tonality and timbre so right. Would be great to get some incisiveness added to the mix.
