Alternative version "Well... I was conscientious for a minute today."
I'm not even sure if it's me who cynical for coming up with that, or the person who uses the original form unironically. Something about treating it like a tally to just... get out of the way.
This is also true. I get what people actually mean by it, it's a good sentiment with a real gesture attached. I think it's more the wording that irks me.
Alternatively, even if what I said was true for anyone, it amounts to one more good deed than otherwise. Not so bad regardless of the reasoning. Just picking nits.
What if it's a step in the right direction? When trying to break free from a shit situation a good deed whatever that may be can hold one until the next day. And at least it forces the persons to actively think about "good" just once a day which isn't nothing.
I was a Christian for half of my life. I had to stop counting sins and the good deeds. You will end up a worrying to death or becoming an arrogant saint. Take care of the people you care about, avoid being an asshole.
What even is "a good deed"? No, are the people you care about happy and you can have a good/interesting conversation? If the answer is yes, good job.
Always thought of it as a reminder to be slightly better than a pass to be an arschloch save for one brilliant instance ever 24h or so, but I suppose there are those that might interpret it that way?
But yeah, call me an optimist but I'd much rather see it as a persistent reminder to actively seek to do nice things. The way it's phrased there's a lot of leeway for reading.
