They are not.
As long as you're not super obese and need retard size gamers chair then premium office chairs are way better ime, and by premium I mean nothing less than $250. I have no specific brand in my mind but they're all excellent if you skip the cheap ones.
Most gaming chairs I have sat in look better than they feel. Foam isn't as supportive or long-lasting, not as much adjustability. Cheap pleather on a lot of them. My Steelcase Leap V2 that I got from a liquidator for $250 several years ago still shames most of what I have sat in at Costco or Bestbuy.
All depends on the chair. I bought a Serta executive office chair and it was miserable on the lumbar. Replaced it yesterday with a cheap gaming chair for half the price that is much better support. The gaming chair is firmer though, but the ergo has to be right or it doesn't matter how poofy it is
My biggest thing is lumbar support and head support sounds like a bonus. My current chair is now 22 years old and seat padding is flat. Even a cheap chair would be an upgrade at this point.
Gaming chairs are complete bullshit. Find a used Steelcase Leap and never look back (look on Craigslist or FB Marketplace). The Aeron works well, too, but make sure you get a model with full lumbar adjustments.
Aeron is pricey and not everyone likes them but it is the chair I am sitting in right now at work and it is the choice of all my friends. Embody I think is also a pretty good chair if you're not too tall.
Went to Staples and bucket the gaming/racing seat is not for me. Those are only comfortable in a slight recline - not very ero for a desk. I settled on a La-z-Boy Arcadian. Call me old school, but that thing is comfy. I did love Aeron's at the recording studios I worked at. All the studios in Nashville have them.
Sit in an Embody for several hours and several positions before buying. I bought and I don't like it.
Also... the seat is sensitive to water. Now, true, three days under water in a flood is excessive, but it destroyed it. I got it fixed, but gave it to wife for occasional use. I don't care for it.
