I keep older amps around for exactly this reason: Headroom Maxx and a Pete Miller FET-A. They are a nice contrast to my Kenzie Ovation.

Some old amps are still glorious ... My Phonitor is the original, now almost 13 years old. Same with the PS Audio GCHA. And a custom OTL amp built when HD650 was king of the hill. These all sound sublime under the right conditions. Amps age way better than DACs.

Completely agree. The FET-A is an oddball amp. I think only 10 were made, but it works great for high impedance headphones. I wonder if the Phonitor is a long-lost sibling based on their age.

Oh God don’t use head-if as a word for hi-fi headphones. That’s a commercial website. Think of head-fi as a corporation.

It was "this hobby". Too long. "Hi-fi headphones" would be too long also. Can't we relax the character limit on status updates just a little?

Oh wow, I used to have a Wadia 121 dac ages ago. I don't remember much about it other than it didn't last long before I recycled it for other gear.

121 is the one. Also have DF, DIYINHK 9023, Modi 2 , Aune, Nuprime uDSD and vintage Theta. 121 is not last word in slam and resolution but is neutral and transparent enough to look for variety in other parts of the "head-fi" hobby. When I crave a higher-end DAC I realize I will have to spend an order of magnitude more. That and the compact form factor has kept the Wadia on its perch for 6 years.
