The tapes itself? Cap Replacement? Misallied tape heads?

Multiple tapes, so not that (unless its all the tapes).

Tape heads do go bad.

Clean the heads; demagnetize the heads; fiddle with the alignment (azimuth); reduce the bias, if possible on your unit. Might just be the tapes, too - if they're all old, HF might suffer on all of them (whether pre-recorded or recording onto them now).

Lazy ass alternative put it in a cupboard till you are 90, you will not have any problems with roll off @ 5 kHz then

Opened it up, nothing looks imediatly wrong inside. All caps looking good at first glance but there is a lot of dark corners to hide inside this reel to reel

Well, I just cleaned the tape heads, and it sounds much better now! All the high frequencies! I am surprised cleaning the tape heads made that much of a difference!

And now I have also snapped my first tape. You cant do that with streaming.

Some of the particles on all the tapes weren't stuck on very hard. Tape heads do need cleaning.

You might still be able to buy proper tape-splicing kits, but if the tape is not too precious then ordinary 'magic' adhesive tape (the stuff you can write on) on the non-playing side works fine as a cheap hack.

Tape shed is a real issue with old tapes. Be careful. Get the scientific denatured alcohol if you can. Super pure stuff. Just not on the rubber...clean those with just soap and water.

Just found a tape labeled "Conversation with Miss Kay Starr on 5 Feb, 70 at stardust hotel in los veges" this should be interesting.

Tape was backwards or something, recording this conversation onto my computer to get it recorded and reverse direction
