Planar refers to a flat driver. Planar Magnetics and electrostatic headphones are both planars. This is why all the old school planar magnetic entusiasts use the term "orthos" as a short word for the tech.

The term "orthodynamic" was created by Yamaha so it's got its own issues but it's at least a correct reference to the right driver technology.

I'm guilty of this. Oppo clearly helped us with PM-1, PM-2, PM-3. :)

“Guilty” isn’t what I was going for, it’s not that big a deal, everyone on SBAF uses the term wrong. I just cringe a little bit every time I see it. :)

E-stats don't count as planars because e-stats are so niche and have even become more niche to the point of who cares. Hence orthos have become the last lineage holders of planars.

Are you kidding @purr1n Stax is back in the game now that they have a 6K headphone!

And Stax are not headphones, they are earspeakers.

I thought ear speakers were K1000 and SR-1a style phones. They’re all headphones to me though.

Much sympathy, but I am too busy fighting the *all abbreviations are not acronyms* battle.

I would love to see this develop into a clear writeup of taxonomy of headphones (or speakers) for reference. It's hard to tell what differences in descriptions are real technology differences and what are just spin / differences in terminology.

@Woland: Not A Chance? If so, yes, it is a lost battle already.

@rhythmdevils: This is a specialist site and we should get specialist stuff right. I don't know anything about Planar-xyz headphones, but that would make it even more important, if I was enquiring, that people get the terminology correct. So I don't think you are nit-picking.

talking about dynamic drivers gets rather complicated quickly. The HD800 is a ring radiator and I don't know any other's.

It still functions like an electrodynamic driver though.

To be more nit picky, orthos and electrodynamics are actually both dynamics. But that doesn’t really matter
