Homelessness has virtually nothing to do with laziness. In addition what @Cspirou said, most cannot get or hold down a job due to addiction, mental health, physical health, criminal record, etc. Not to mention it’s hard to get a job without an alarm to wake up, a shower to clean up, or a phone to be reached for an interview. There are many, many reasons, the least of which is willingness to get a job.

And the fact that there /are/ beggars who do quite well out of it is no basis to punish the rest.

Here, there are families/gangs of beggars. Yes, it is a job, and a pretty lousy one. Which is why I do give them what, to me, is a tiny amount of money.

Second thoughts... how about offering them a job? If that is not possible, give them a dollar or two.
