Planned obsolescence is a byproduct of capitalism and the insatiable desire for corporate “growth”. It’s a scourge on our planet, not to mention annoying as shit.
I know right @sphinxvc. I'm not 100% happy that the Pixel 6 that I pre-ordered only has three years OS update and five years security updates. Still better long term update wise than Sony stuff.... : /
One thing I can say about Apple devices vs Android is they keep giving you the full iOS updates for quite a long time (as long as the device keeps working of course). Of course it starts to perform slowly over time, but at least you don’t get stuck after a couple years with no updates. iOS 15 just released supports iPhone 6s from 2015.
This is the one reason I think Apple isn't wholly dog doodoo since they're able to maintain long-term support for their fewer SKUs. Of course it's still up to end user to keep updating-- just found out I have two siblings still on MacOS El Capitan (2015) which might explain a lot of the issues they've been experiencing lately.
It's interesting that Apple provides support for so long given that the hardware is their big money maker. You'd think they would want to push the planned obsolescence of the hardware faster than Android where the hardware is often used as a loss leader for services.
The custom Android ROM game is still going somewhat strong but it's not as lively as it used to be about a decade back with the DarkyROM community and others; LineageOS supported the GT-i9000 Galaxy S up until 2017 it seems, but with how many models there are out now development is diffused.
@Merrick Apple do seem to at least give the “appearance” of trying to be somewhat responsible and ethical regarding the environment and privacy (the child porn scanning thing notwithstanding). Privacy and device updatability were 2 of them main reasons I switched from Android to Apple.
I think we audio types are acutely sensitive to this phenomenon. Some of us are still rocking 40-50+ year old gear - planned obsolescence is crux anathema to the hobby.
