First, it's not a popularity contest. Second, in what respect(s)? Third, I should be upfront about my preferences: none of the HD-8 series has been to my taste. But please don't let that deter you. I'm interested in what you have to say.
I'm just wondering if its just because physics and just the soundstaging, space, decay, detail, layering are things have a strong bearing with having treble presence. I feel the same when going from headphones to speakers as well. I just haven't heard an iem that actually has that much detail retreival/technicality @Claritas
The KSE1500 is inferior to the O2 in terms of the way it projects space, so I get where you are coming from. Perhaps its from the lack of pinna interaction.
Detail retrieval is a different matter though, I think IEMs aren't inferior in this respect at all. It might just be Dunu's dark (IMO) tuning not working for you - I think the Fiio FD7 with its pure beryllium driver is fantastically detailed.
Call me deaf but I actually don't think IEMs are particularly worse than headphones when it comes to presenting headstage. Could just be my pinnae being weird but while nothing is quite like speakers, there are some IEMs from the like of CA, Final, or even FitEar that don't fall on their faces in the presence of headphones, even the HD800 and variants.
