I'd probably do the comparison with whatever system I planned to use the new DAC with. But regardless of the method, if the differences aren't obvious that means the cheaper one is the better choice :p
2-3% with speakers just for fun and curiosity, but mostly with headphones. To me speakers (at the volume allowed to me) sorta equate things -- every product sounds moderately good in the end.
92% speakers. And usually triangulating with the vinyl rig where albums I have allow. Aside: more folks need to plug BF2 into a decent speaker/amp rig.
I’m more in line with @yotacowboy. 95%+ speakers as that’s what I listen to most in my main room. I also listen more for spatial and soundstage details and it’s much easier with speakers.
Gotta use both. Headphones for detail retrieval, and can let you hone in on different aspects of the FR more easily to determine the capabilities/qualities of the sound reproduction. Speakers for things like soundstage, layering, realism in an open space. A really good DAC will retain its character on speakers as it does on headphones.
