...BUT I am actually contemplating returning them due to the soft coat finish that makes me look like I only touch the headphones after a basket of fries.
Might be on to something.
Eventually the oils will build or the coating will decay and the headphones will be shiny and sticky. Might as well grease them up so it is a consistent finish...
I did not know these were out! As an owner of the XM2, XM3, and XM4 newer is not always better. The XM3 and XM4 have the same soft coat finish. The headphone present sensor is a disappointment on the XM4, so I am sad to see it remain on the XM5. The touch controls on the XM2 is the best and suck on the XM3/4. The SQ is worst on the XM3, but they are the most comfortable.
The headphone present sensor on the XM4 causes issues with Teams/ Zooms calls on Windows/ MacOS for everyone at my work. Even if you have it disabled, the headphone will mute the speakers and mic if you lift the ear cup off of your head to hear something. You have to swap sound cards back and forth to restore audio. It also causes the FR to be slightly different on each ear.
Just read a prior comment from you and it sounds like you an XM3. The coating on the XM4 is the same as the XM3. There are two physical differences between the XM3 and XM4: The XM3 headband can adjust for smaller heads than the XM4 can. There’s an ear present sensor in the left ear of the XM4.
