I had the Helm Bolt for a while, used every now and then with my Clear Mg, but it was a bit meh compared to the Jot 2/ESS. Not bad, but boring. Actually a bit cleaner, but rather emotionless.
I always thought, well, it’s a dongle, don’t expect too much, and used it very seldom.
Now, with the Timeless, things are different. Unlike the Clear Mg, without even noticing consciously myself, I used them more from the Bolt than from the Jot.
Then I did some comparisons, and yes, the Timeless sound like shit for many treble heavy songs from the Jot, like Funky Butt Strutt or Phyllis by Lettuce. Much too much energy in the sizzling region for my taste.
From the Bolt, these songs are a pleasure to listen to with the Timeless.
OTOH, this extra treble energy of the Jot is a good thing paired with the darkness of the Clear Mg.
The only thing I miss with Bolt+Timeless is a bit of extra subbass, the Bolt is a bit rolled off there. And the mid bass hump could be a bit smaller. But all in all, the pairing is a lot of fun to listen to.
@Biodegraded The RU6 is to arrive tomorrow, so I can only tell then. My Sparrow is broken, unfortunately, but maybe I should try if it works with the Timeless as they are more efficient than the Clear.
The Sparrow does produce sound, but already at low volumes it is horribly distorted, the distortion being louder than the music.
@Biodegraded The RU6 provides a good portion of extra sub bass for the Timeless compared to the Bolt. Very satisfyingly so, sounds totally great. Mid and upper bass are similar.
I didn’t try the broken Sparrow yet, but I don’t think it will produce any meaningful sound, anyway.
How about the *texture* of the mid-bass? Timeless mid-bass is somewhat "soft/pillowy/floppy" and lowest mids a bit lean; I'm interested in sources that minimize the perceived disconnect between.
I hear no disconnection with the RU6 (don’t have the Bolt at hand right now). But, TBH, I’m not sure if I would hear it even from a source that is known to sound disconnected.
