Anything mass-market in the last ten years probably had a digital step, sure, but MoFi was supposed to be (or perhaps assumed to be) one of those all-analog shops. The website wording and statements are... an interesting collection of words.
I also own zero MoFi vinyl from the past 10 years or so. Cannot afford. Not going to pay $100 for Thriller when I have the record that I bought in the 80s.
I have MoFi records made in the last 10 years, many are very good, but I am not paying $100+ for a new production record unless it's coming with a hefty bag of cocaine to snort off the cover.
Yeah, it would be a big-ish deal if MoFi OneSteps were not all-analog. It's a big part of the appeal. But Mike at In-Groove has also been known to wade right into a controversy.
FWIW, Music Direct is here in Chicago, actually in the city proper. Been up there a few times and had decent to good experiences. They are big vinyl nuts obviously. I don't personally see the need for a super expensive version of, say, I, Robot (which is easily found in the stacks), but if people buy it...
This actually brings up a bigger question for me - is vinyl even going to be worth it for a lot music 10 years from now? Seems like there are more and more issues as time goes on. Too much new music doesn't even need it, masters eventually digital, studio time and good gear / professionals too $, societal shifts, etc.
I have no problems with vinyl that uses a digital step, it's been happening since the late 70s. What I do mind is a company leading consumers to think their product is AAA when it isn't. It's not proven that's happening with MoFi yet, but if it is that's a big blow to their credibility.
I’ve always said I don’t really care about vinyl cause like 99% of what I listen to is recorded/mixed/mastered digitally. If at any point it hits digital before it’s pressed, just give me _that_ version
I guess to expand on my thought, if it was ever digital, I don’t see any reason to use a complicated mechanical system to attempt to recreate whatever dac was used to make the pressing, lemme use my own dac in the first place
