I have mine by last name but Discogs and online music services default to first name. Kinda drives me nuts.

Year - with a bit of slop so that closely-timed releases from the same or similar artist are adjacent or close to each other.

Believe it or not, I can usually find what I'm looking for :)

@shotgunshane I originally had by last name as well, but due to matching Discogs and other services, I switched to first name a while back. Tried organizing by genre for awhile, but got to be a pain to decide for stuff that didn't fall into obvious category.

best to worst, group the good stuff, if its better it sits more closely to my tt / cdp

Physical media I go by last name, but anything digital I default to the media player's choice instead of swimming upstream so to speak.

Then usually last name because that makes the most sense for classical music and I just apply that everywhere

Sorted by Last Name and Original Release Date. I match this physical sorting in the sorting tags for my digital music, but the only software that seems to reliably respect that is the Sony Walkman. I also ignore articles like A, An, The. Where things get more contentious are ignoring articles in other languages (Le, La, El), or does Bonnie Prince Billy go under Bi, Bo, or O...

I have a dual system: one shelf, things I want to play soon, no specific order; then they rotate out to the shelves organized by first name.

During the 2020 lockdowns I had a moment of insanity and resorted everything alphabetically by primary color on the jacket/case. I didn't realize how many blue records I had...

Last Name ABC order

I sort like a record store. First by genre, then by last name. If Im feeling really fancy, albums oldest to newest

I dunno why you guys bother sorting into *26 completely unrelated categories. I sort into three groups 1) good albums, 2) albums with one good song, and 3) all the rest. (sometimes the forth is "I don't remember")
*this is an obscure joke reference, I wonder who will recognize it*

By first name in folders as below, so I don't have to scroll so much. Number of artists is about the same in each:
A-B
C-E
F-L
M-R
S
T-Z

Edit: oops, totally missed "physical" ... I don't have any anymore (and happier for it) :P
(slept <5 hrs cuz baby wouldn't)

By genre, then group by favorites, non-favorites, stuff I need to revisit and stuff I haven't listened to yet.
