I have been a big fan of the Etymotic ER20XS. They do a good job of putting things at a reasonable volume level, and actually making it sound better, really cleans up the sound when things are being mixed way too loud. Don't seem to kill the experience at all, really enhances things.
I just use foam plugs from the pharmacy / general store, or my IEMs without anything playing through them in a pinch. Some more FR-optimized protection would be cool. 64 audio has some nice looking custom options.
I have an old pair of V-moda Faders that I don't think are made anymore. Etys are good but the fit isn't for everyone. Sometimes, a simple toque or beanie also works.
I use the Etymotic ER20 I think. They've revised them since I bought them 10+ years ago. An alcohol wipe after using has kept them nice enough I don't feel the need to replace. I liked them over foam plugs because they messed with the frequency response less.
What I really want is something that cuts volume by a mere 5-10dB.
I don't do rock or other really loud stuff, but am often in the situation where "acoustic" music is not *reinforced* but amplified, and by a notch to two too much.
Cotton wool is either insufficient or just acoustically bad, but it is the best thing I have so far.
@Thad E Ginathom, my audiologist said that they take custom impressions for earplugs that come with removable filters with different dB reduction amounts (ranging from 5 or 10 (I forget which) up to around 30 or so). May be worth looking into. I don't remember the company name unfortunately, but had "sonics" in it...
