Dear Reddit: "amp" is not a goddamn acronym. Just because it has the same number of letters as DAC doesn't mean you have to capitalize it.

Not all acronyms are capitalised. By their very nature, they lead themselves to not being. But then... like I said, people don't know what acronyms are.

Curious. DAC/dac is an acronym: ADC/adc is not.

I really wish Qobuz had a way to make lists of albums other than your favorites.

Not having some kind of to-listen list means my favorites are a weird mix of "actual favorite recordings I've been listening to for years" and "weird recordings I've never heard of before but I'm curious about and saving for later".

I really wish Qobuz and Tidal would allow users to put favorited/followed artists into folders to keep them organized. My list of followed/favorited artists is a complete mess that goes from metal to folk to reggae to world music to classic rock to blues etc all over the place it's almost impossible to navigate. I miss iTunes to be honest with the column browser and genres I could assign to every artist.

I have a decade-old MacBook Pro that I keep to have a copy of iTunes, a backup for my main system, and to rip CDs (its drive is very good). For all iTunes' faults, it really did have the best UI for my needs. Column browser FTW!

Are there any businesses or whatnot you can pay to re-terminate a pair of headphones? I haven't soldered in years (and have lost my iron).

@atomicbob A vintage pair of Yamaha YH-1's that were pretty extensively modded before I bought them. I keep wishing I could use them balanced, but the previous owner used a normal 3.5mm jack when he recabled them.

I've got a contemporary-to-that amp on loan from a friend and it's got some things going for it despite not being what I'd call daily driver material by a long shot. Definitely fun to revisit old gear and see how they fare in modern contexts.

In the end the bbc dip prompted me to sell mine, but the prices on the VC have been coming down and there always seems to be plenty of them for sale over on Head-Fi. I'm wondering how much the audio market will be impacted with the recession that will become obvious in the next few months...

@GanGreinke @edd @Cryptowolf My big concern with the Mini C is soundstage...the main reason I got my current AKGs is that they have a pretty good soundstage for closed headphones, but they just kinda sound thin compared to my HD800's or my HE500's. IEMs might be a possibility despite the soundstage thing, though, since those could also come in handy when I'm doing chores or running errands.

Yes. Depending on your machine, the new EC modulators are amazing. I'm a linear phase guy and like xtr LP, ext-3 LP, and sync m LP. You'll only be able to do 256 with the EC modulators, but it is glorious.

I think "hi res" might just have more marketing cachet over there, since there's a Japanese standard for it. I remember Audio-Technica making a big deal about the MSR7 being "Hi-Res Certified" back when it was new. I also remember the standard maybe having nothing to do with resolution of any sort for headphones...

Honestly with JPop the main draw of high res that I can see is that the high frequency needles are more prominent in listening. If it's not upper midrange aggression or "air" frequency shelves, it's both. Then again most of the JPop I know is anisong and city pop so not fully representative.

When I changed from Spotify to Qobuz, the big experience for me wasn’t sound quality, but sth completely different: Not being spoon fed “music I might like” by an algorithm. It felt like going to a record store: Some stuff on display, but not tailored to what a computer thinks is good for me, chosen by humans instead, the same for everyone who visits. It felt SO good.

I did the same recently. It's very good with the 800Ss. I did a back-to-back with the Jot 2. The results were mixed, with the BHA-1 presenting a better stage, greater clarity and detail. The JOT2 was more dynamic and "rocking". In the end the JOT 2 is up for sale again. (Roon->PI2AES->AES->Hilo->BAL->BHA-1->BAL>Headphones)
