I started collecting vinyl in 2008. Back then you could get scruffy but playable albums for $1-$3, albums in good condition for $10. Only really rare records went for big money. Now the minimum is $5 for records you wouldn't get a dime for before. New vinyl is very hit and miss. I don't recommend someone getting in now.
Surprisingly I have never had much nervosa about my modest vinyl rig and do enjoy it. But I also have music ADHD and most of my collection just sits on the shelf aside from special occasions. I have more fun per dollar with cassettes
I'm still in it, but I am very choosey on what albums I buy anymore.
New vinyl is almost exclusively box sets or 45 RPM remasters. Too many other new releases are being "fast pressed" for quantity and not for quality.
Luckily I have a local used store that doesn't try to pawn off gashed trash as "near mint", but he has to charge Discogs-level prices to keep the lights on.
I started to go the CD route a little while ago, but realized CDs were not going to scratch the itch I had for LPs. Just not nearly as satisfying in its packaging, tactility and overall experience (not to mention nostalgia). A very poor substitute IME.
I can see that, but you can't get good sound quality from records until you spend big money. I just can't stand surface noise, speed variation and higher distortion levels. Maybe I just didn't have the know-how when it comes to set up.
Nervosa has kept me from exploring tube gear, but for some reason, it hasn’t kept me away from vinyl. Maybe it’s because I grew up listening to vinyl records, and I really enjoy what the medium is capable of providing under the right conditions. The devil you know, I guess.
And the handling and cleaning of vinyl. A buddy tries to get me to go back in, but I just don’t have the time/money/space for more nervosa. Good tubes and a decent DAC/server do me well. For now.
Nothing beats the physical experience of vinyl. But I see no reason to go there if you are not there already (ok, there a few, but too much for a profile post) or nostalgia, in which case you probably have the records already.
Gear porn? Well, sure. Turntables are nice. Expensive turntables are... pass me that tissue box!
Actually, it is the vinyl that is allergic to me. It gets all spotty and crackly the moment I touch it.
But still, I prefer some of my rips with imperfections, to cleaner copies, especially some of these later "remasters." My rips have soul. Vinyl reincarnation?
I started collecting a handful of albums without a system when I was finishing my Master study.. Then went with a budget system and upgraded one component at a time based on a prio list I made. Now I dont spend on upgrades anymore and buy an album a month or so, and it feels easy (until I start calculating the total costs..)
