Just don't sell to randos anywhere even with PayPal goods and services payments a seller can still get it up the wazoo if the buyer wants to play games.
Local meetups not feasible? For the most part when it's stuff I don't mind going to someone random (not necessarily a "rando" if that makes sense) I just go with FB Marketplace and screen folk for weirdness, meet in public spots with lots of security e.g. a mall.
HF has been very weak for some time unless perhaps for a FOTM piece. My stuff that was listed there was crickets and always sells on ebay. Actual buyers visit both places and both buyer and seller are better protected on ebay. Shame they are so pricey.
I stopped selling electronics on eBay a few years ago, and would encourage others to do the same. Entitled buyers seem to treat it like Amazon these days, where they feel like they can return an item if they don't like it, at your expense.
Nothing wrong with USAM so far, it's only last because usually things move between the first two.
I do agree about HF feeling riskier recently though - my two bad experiences on HF were both fairly recent. One was from the staff there pointing out how the rules dictate I must sell a certain way and not in another way that IMO better manages the risk for both parties.
Real crux of the issue though is IMO having to use PP on HF and how lazy PP has gotten recently with it's buyer/seller protection. Buyer can claim defective with any random picture from online, get a refund by submitting a valid tracking number, and then literally send back a box of rocks or trash.
@penguins Sorry you had to deal with that. That's nuts! You have me wondering if, on HF, one should simply require a bank check. (Is there a similar online service?)
^ HF mods shut down one of my listings because I requested partial payment via a non PP G&S method so I'm guessing the answer is no. That and there's always the risk of an "ordinary" check bouncing.
Should clarify that the "rocks" thing didn't happen to me on HF. But something very similar happened to me elsewhere (non-audio). Only consolation was it was an inexpensive item.
@penguins That's why I specified a bank check (the check is coming from the bank instead of the person), so it can't bounce. It's a physical check. But you might well be right that HF won't like it because what it considers "unprotected payment methods" is... somewhat odd.
