    Sure, it does.

It gets a bit scratchier every day, sometimes even when it isn't being played!

There are magical beings, capable of keeping their records in mint condition. And yes, they do play them.

This has been a huge mystery to me for over fifty years.

Why does bit rot sound familiar and why does it make me think that there might be some people who would SWEAR that SLC SSDs sound better than MLC over time?

I listen to 78s. It's a mystery how they sounded originally because the only ones we can find have bit-rotted for ~100 years, and that's longer than a fair side-by-side comparison to current gear. One thing we know for sure though is that they haven't been messed up by DSD masters.

@Lyander --- of course, bit rot is complete nonsense, and was just a bit of an excuse for the pun

@Woland --- I grew up with 78s, including my parents' records from 40s. I broke a few, cracked a few, and wore out one or two.

The record I remember playing from new to worn-out was Harry Belafonte's Island In The Sun.

It is still one of my top favourite songs.

@Lyander --- SSDs and stuff... Music sounds just as good played from a slow CD drive as it does form an audiophool SSD. This is one reason why I think that high-spec PCs for audio are stupid.

@Woland --- as I have commented, I have from-vinyl rips that, noise and all, I would rather listen to than newer, clean, digital versions. But I don't think it is the technology that screws up the music, but what the mastering guys do with their knobs.

But you AT LEAST need ECC RAM to make sure no bits get flipped! (Sarcasm).

I *love* the sound that bits make as they flip!
