I tend to use ALAC (Apple Lossless) for purchases and rips only to stay compatible with Apple Music in case Roon ceases to be a viable alternative. Though AM itself continues to get shittier with each release.
Most places offer FLAC, but I sometimes rip to WAV. The format doesn’t need to be consistent since most players can decipher the type. If needs be, there’s software to convert.
FLAC for the past 15+ years. Picked it up after earlier trying OGG on Linux. It became my format of choice when I could afford the space to store it but didn't want to deal with the lack of metadata with WAV. I got on the Apple train from 2010 onward but never migrated. iTunes wasn't worth the hassle.
Preferred is Wav, but chosen based on older mobile listening tests as compared to flac. Today that may not be the case. Regardless, pretty much all downloads are offered in Flac which is fine. I just convert them to wav out of habit. Really need to do a listening test with jriver and the main stereo setup to see if I prefer one over the other.
