Usually I need to turn the nob by just by a sliver to get the perfect volume and even having a couple hundred steps doesn’t seem like it would be enough resolution.
Relay-switched resistors are a lower noise path than a potmeter's contacts. Typically available in 0.1, 0.5 or 1.0 dB granularity.
No channel imbalance at low volume and a more linear taper than you get with pots. You give up granularity of adjustment, of course.
I am not keen on them for anything. Always just too quiet or just too loud, and never quite right. (And how is it that Android phones make such a total mess of the volume control?)
