It's really difficult to buy into the idea that the strength of this movie is all this philosophical-intellectual-whatever when you're talking about a movie where the plot lines Make No Sense.
The same fleet that Can jump in to light speed can't overtake Leia's cruiser? Why not? The tie fighters had closed that gap in about two seconds. What an absolutely cheap premise to build a Starwars movie on top of. Even if this were reasonable (and it isn't) is this the best that they could come up with?
The two most doggedly determined characters through the franchise, who brought their father back to redemption after decades of his having been the biggest villain in the galaxy, are writing off Leah's son without even trying to bring him back? Sure... OK
Snoke was made out to be to powerful to not notice a lightsaber being pointed at him from a few inches away by a pupil who's mind he had just bridged across the galaxy to someone else's.
Space Walrus milking, Leah in space, 'Can you hear me now'? Letting your new Han Solo mutiny instead of just telling him the escape plan (which also made no sense) Mirage Luke from across the galaxy... On and On this movie was stupid. Watching a film that was this shitilly written be praised on a cerebral level is a joke.
Finn, go to space Monaco and bring back Justin Theroux as the fate of the Resistance depends on it. Finn gets arrested for a parking violation and brings back a different dude... this movie is laughable.
It doesn't make sense. I can't argue you out of liking that movie but I can argue that you like a shitty movie. I'm motivated to do so as it pains me that people will encourage studios to keep releasing that kind of garbage that not only was an awful movie but a Big FU to the core fans that have supported the franchise for decades.
It does make sense. I can’t argue you out of hating the movie but I can argue that you hate a very good movie. I’m motivated to do so as it pains me that people discourage studios from releasing movies (especially franchise movies) that take chances and make the world feel genuinely unpredictable and exciting.
I'm not against taking chances, I'm against stupid premises, unrealistic character portrayal, misplaced and failed attempts at humor... so many of the defenses of this train wreck are masturbatory pseudo intellectual self congratulations of 'getting' the boldness of the vision while completely missing how stupid of a movie ended up on screen.
From the 'excellent' review: "It feels like a proper Star Wars movie by refusing to feel like a Star Wars movie. " ...yeah, ok... those dudes that have been going to conventions for 30 years dressed as Boba Fett and Jedis and camping in front of cineplexes making this franchise worth revisiting 35 years later? I'm sure they walked out of the theater excited because their 'tropes had been subverted'.
Not to spark anything, but. For me it was the weakest movie of the series. Most shallow, predictable and recycled. Loved the main character, though, as she still shines, and Spooky's bebodying was cool. But other than that, much of a disappointment. (That, plus the bloody technician who set up the Dolby ScrewYou (TM) was friggin' deaf; next time I'm going to the cinema I'm bringing ear plugs.)
