@Justin S The SP-BS22. https://www.pioneerhomeusa.com/product/sp-bs22-lr/ I think they were the second or third speaker Andrew Jones made for Pioneer. I got the towers to make a theater setup out of them, but the BS22 themselves are great near-fields for $100 (at the time).

Try re-terminating the ends first. Those are what usually fails.

I picked up an Ethernet cable tester for this exact reason. Life. Saver.

Somebody once told me that he got much better sound from his amplifier after having the power cables /welded/ in place.

Yeah... give me IEC. As long as they are moulded on. I've hand wired a few. Awful job. The stripping and cutting has to be /just/ right!

@crenca In the first phase here I'm rotating around a few existing Cambridge toys: CXC CD for Coax; CXN Streamer for Optical passthrough; I have a Pi sitting around here for BNC and USB -- I just need to find which box I put it in.

@Azimuth Highly. This is one of my favorite combos right now, especially when I need a jolt of mental energy.

The worst that ever happened to me in a restaurant was a very pretty, very smart girl at a dinner party who was offended by something (unclear what). Out of nowhere, she exploded, "Oh, f**k you!!! I am *not* talking to you anymore!" I rolled my eyes purposely for the whole table to see, and drily said, "If any of you gentlemen needs me, I'll be at the bar." And casually walked away.

Given our proximity to one another I've probably been at that sushi place. But some of the other places I've been, i'd imagine an old angry asian woman coming out from the kitchen to give the offenders a verbal beating and large dose of shame.

In enough ways, that's a blessed life.

Life is like tossing salad, you need a really strong flavor to mask the realities of real tastes.

Laser thermometer? Unlikely. You probably have IR thermometer with laser pointer. It will measure everything emitting infrared spectra. That can be the filament itself behind the glass envelope. When you see metal glow red it usually means more than 400 deg C.

I didn’t this was possible because of how XLR cables are configured with one end female and the other male. Why would you have a female - female XLR cable?

Unless you are using the RCA output/input. But then what is the point of a balanced preamp and balanced amp if you aren’t using balanced cables?

@Cspirou Short version of that story is the Freya balanced out is tied up by Mjolnir now; so I’ve got Jot a bit out of place as an SE-only amp for the moment.

He was pretty stressed out the first couple years, but he is just resigned now. Him, the insurance company, and various (sub)contractors (and their insurers) all have lawyers, and the city is involved too for code issues. Makes me shake my head.

Also, I wonder how much the lawyers are colluding to stretch this case out.

Speaking with him we are both very sure far more money has been spent in the legal system than the entire repair job would have cost even if they did it twice. Nobody wants to take any blame though, and that appears to be worth more money than anything else.
