Thanks for the answers. I will also add that frequently even in professional circles, bespoke custom solutions generally perform better and are typically more expensive.

It seems like a heavily edited EARS with well thought out compensation curves and consistent adjustments at the hands of a 'professional' (really someone very familiar with the set up) - can potentially out perform the GRAS solution, as should be expected given the additional time, attention, and tribal knowledge needed to get such results.

Whether you want to call such a solution 'professional' or not seems neither here nor there, what matters is the (consistent) results giving expected conclusions.

OK. With a B&K system you may get an ITU compliant rig.

That said, I believe B&K drives all those standards (ear simulator specific ones) and may be heavily invested in them. Note further that there is no single ear simulator that will exactly match any single individual AFAIK.

This is great, thanks for the info and your work.

This is why standardized measurement is important for objective level talk and is a good starting point, but I always suggest the final eq to be based on pink noise and pure tone listening.

I have no idea how we'll solve the 10k+ response measurement if ever. Thankfully it's not as important as the below part; most humans of age hear up to 15k anyway so that's the top three tones

    Edit:talking about personal use

I actually think that the 10k+ response issue is less of an issue that it's made out to be. If it was a big deal, it would be a big deal not just for headphones, but for everything including speakers and real life sounds. It isn't because the brain should learn the response.

I believe the volume driven may be different from individual to individual. But I also believe the volume maters most in lower frequencies. Specially for IEMs.

We could (and have) build all kinds of models of the average ear, or whatever random ear that suits ITU's fancy. The question is, how much does it mater for full size headphones? And does it make any sense to have a single standard for IEMs given population variance?

At some point it seemed to me that things were moving in the right direction when IEM companies started to supply acoustic equalizers to suit particular needs. I thought the wide spread use of equalization would certainly come, specially for IEMs. Instead I seem more ITU stuff being pushed in an apparent self-serving fashion. And as expected, a large population of expensive headphones and IEMs continue to suck.

Look, I'm not trying to piss on the EARS, but it's not made for the same purpose as GRAS gear.

EDIT: and please, let's not use what Jude's doing as proof of the capabilities of AP or GRAS gear... that would be selling it short ... a LOT.

Well, we are not talking development. We are talking characterization.

Do you feel EARS will be a world off from GRAS given similar couplers and calibration files? How much do you feel this delta will be for different types of headphones?

And yes, it's obvious Jude does not know WTF he is doing, nor cares, unless it can cook gray, unreadable, and everything is awesome numbers for his sponsor's lack luster products.

measurement from EARS seem pretty impressive given the price tag.
