Spider-Man: No Way Home was surprisingly good. I thought it would suck; well because metaverse stuff and too many villains films tend to suck. Also, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, an earlier metaverse film (animated), was very very good, so I went into this film with very expectations. No Way Home isn't as good as Into the Spider-Verse, but is turned out to be extremely satisfying. Sure it's another Marvel film, but I wanted to support Sony Studios because they are such an underdog. It would suck if the five remaining major studios turned into four or three. Only a few years ago, there were six major studios, until Disney borged Fox.

Anyway, after the film, my son, who has not seen the prior Spiderman films with Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield (or forgot because he was too young), remarked that one of these actors was his favorite Spiderman.

I curious to your guys' opinion. The Internet buzz in the last few years has been rather high on the new guy Tom Holland, as the bestest ever. I suspect this is the Disney marketing machine at work. And no, I'm not including Nicolas Hammond as a choice.

I think Maguire pretty much established himself as THE Spiderman, simply because he came first, also cuz memes. It's gonna take time until he fades into obscurity like the first actors that portrait James Bond.

Gonna go with Tobey. I think everything about the movies was just better, although I haven't seen the new movie yet.

The way he discovered his new powers, a great balance of dorkiness versus wisecracking, best villains (1 and 2 at least). I even thought emo Spidey was well acted, even if it was stupid in the movie.

Tom Holland is good, but I'm really starting to tire of the whole Marvel universe approach. As time goes by, it just gets more and more exhausting.

Tobey Maguire was a very interesting Spider Man even though the films haven't aged particularly well with pure campiness. Garfield is too charismatic to be a good Peter Parker while Holland is dweeby enough to sell the 90s Spider Man that I grew up with well, plus his "growing into the role of a hero" arc was probably the most impressive of the lot.

    Objectively speaking: Tom Holland.
    Subjectively speaking: Tobey Maguire.

Penchant for understatement is Toby Maguire's strength. Holland is good, but it seems that he's a victim of the MCU approach where they made his Spiderman smell too much like teen spirit.

MCU ruined Spiderman and made him a gee whiz lackey of Tony Stark. As gross as that is it’s the only Spiderman most kids know and it’s a hugely popular franchise.

Tobey and his villains really stole the show. You're dead right when you say it was way campier-- that was just the super hero genre before MCU-- but those older movies gave great actors like Willem Dafoe a lot of space to really ham it up. Green goblin & Doc Ock really stood out in No Way Home, especially next to the Andrew Garfield villains who barely had a personality or more current characters like Strange who were mostly one-liners.

I believe Tobey would deserve the title of "Best" but I am not 100% sure if it's because he was the best spiderman or because the trilogy films were obviously superior.

That being said, as a "neighborhood", I think I like Tom's Peter better. I could easily identify with his ways of adventuring world, interacting with other people, and getting troubled (mostly due to immaturity I've been to at some point of my life). Also, questions and situations he faced in the film were more .. life like to me.

Tom is very talented and versatile. He has created a successful Spiderman model and iterated it superbly in all his appearances. Tobey has a special sensibility and a great economy of expression. I think he's captured much better the inadequacy of the superhero in situations where he struggles to be perceived as the average teenager.

I like Tobey, but Tom's Spiderman is more exciting and fun, which is more like the Spiderman I knew in the comics. Tobey more resembles the nerdy side of Peter Parker before he was bitten in the comics.
