Ok, from that link I found this reference to 1.5m
    https://positive-feedback.com/Issue14/spdif.htm

And to be honest? it's dumb... because it's essentially saying that there's an inherent problem with the signal transmission with regards to reflections, so let's just bootstrap a solution by making the cable long enough so the reflection doesn't interfere. To me this feels like if someone has a noise floor issue and we tell them the solution is to sit twice as far away and turn it up louder. It's a solution to the symptom, but doesn't address the problem.

So, how it went for me...

    1. Okayish grade Klotz mic cable with regular Neutrik XLR's - absolute pee-pee-poo-poo. I made the cable, so maybe my handiwork is to blame.
    2. Audiophool grade stiff cable with Neutrik XLR's - better, more than listenable maybe. Staging seems narrow, compared to using an RME ADI-2 Pro to drive analog ins which then get AD/DA treatment.
    3. Belden 1800F with properly installed Neutrik XCC connectors - I guess that's it, finally. Staging and details surpasses the previous best config, apparent depth finally appears in the stereo image. Crimping the XCC's is a bit of a pita, but it can be done with most RF cable crimpers.

You used Neutrik XCC connectors. Any ideas whether the Neutrik EMC series (which don't seem to need crimping tools) would be as good/better/worse? They seem to use capacitors for the braided shield - XLR shell connection and a ferrite for the drain wire - Pin 1 connection. I have absolutely no idea if this would help or hinder. Maybe it's good for digital cables and bad for audio?

XCC series is meant for digital audio, whilst EMC is for analog signals in high RF pollution environments. I don't think that either can be bad for analog or digital audio. It's just that XCC is meant for digital.

Thank you, I missed that but when I went back to the Neutrik site I found the information.
