I'm a fan of the source material, and the trailer looks pretty good to be honest. I'm even cool with their giving Rosa Salazar massive anime eyes to make her stand out in a disturbing way. Dunno about others but my calendars are marked :p

Yes, those eyes are very disturbing and this flick is going to be very enjoyable!

I liked the 1993 OAV, but given Hollywood's track record with anime...

Superheroes movies were mostly terrible years back and now they are really good, perhaps it'll happen with anime too. Maybe they'll finally up their game, we can hope.

Ghost in the Shell with Scarlett Johansson as the Major was just last year so that's still probably a ways away bit I'm always ready to be pleasantly surprised if turns out being the anime equivalent of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man...

They already borked one of my all time favorites with Ghost in the Shell...

It could've been worse. It really could.

Just a subjective opinion, but I really disliked each SM with Tobey Maguire. As much as I like Kirsten Dunst (I enjoyed her perfirmance in Melancholia thoroughly), T. Maguire is, well, not a good actor.

It can always get worse but I think big budget failures are more deserving of mockery. Marvel, at least, has turned it around. Maybe if they start bringing in more Japanese creators or execs who understand the original instead of just licensing stuff like it's a logo to put on a t-shirt we might get somewhere.

That said, other than biases of the movie-going public, there's no reason live action adaptations in the first place.

All the lead actors besides Willem Dafoe were pretty mediocre but it kept the important parts of the source material and transferred it to live action without it looking rediculous. You could go backwards or forwards a couple years and maybe pick X-Men (2000) or Batman Begins (2005) as the turning point too. Before that it's only Batman (1989).

I don't see the point of widespread live-action anime adaptations. The medium is itself nearly as important as the story and characters. Animation bridges the gap between literature and motion picture in that it allows for more fantastic and imaginative stories that would be awkward or infeasible in film. Can you imagine if a hack director such as JJ Abrams turned an anime masterpiece like Your Name into yet another Hollywood bowel movement?

Obviously that won't happen because Abrams has previously demonstrated the humility to leave iconic creative properties like Star Trek and Star Wars in more capable hands.

What if instead of anime adaptations, we cut out the middle men and just got full film length anime remakes instead?

I'd be down for true to the source ghost in the shell or akira given the same level of polish as modern studio productions.

    He's a great actor, agreed.

Subjectively I wouldn't. I've found the whole X line nowhere near as good as those two Batmans (fabulous flicks IMO btw.) you've mentioned if someone asks me ;)

Only if they do it right. For Hellsing (which was awesome, gory and emotional) you have to have the guts to not compromise and acknowledge what made it work.

It is such an operatic kind of anime it has to be exiting or it will not work.

If it can make money then that's all the reason they need.

Also there are plenty of great live action adaptations of literature containing fantastical/surreal elements. I also didn't think Your Name was all that good.

Agreed, no brakes in this one. And lots of blood. I see bossy Lena Headey as Integra and have no idea who should be Alucard.

Great choice. Let's clarify though, you meant the Pet Detective era Jim Carrey, right?

I was feeling more Kickass 2, but yeah that'd be another good source to draw from

Lock down any unclaimed properties and hope it spawns a money making tentpole series of films. That is if the property actually translates beyond its cultural background to a mass audience.

    Lol, this article explains it.
