My wife is a total anime/manga nut, so over a dozen years of marriage I've been thoroughly pulled over to the dark side.

A couple of stand-out shows in my opinion:

Last Exile - often overlooked, but an anime perhaps the most satisfying ending possible, and I love steampunk.
Shinsekai Yori - this show just stuck with me and is a really interesting take that poses some interesting questions.
    Mushishi - beautiful, and thoughtful

Just watched the final episode of Food Wars-Shokugeki no Soma. It was absurd, but man I'm going to miss that show. It was extremely entertaining.

Anime that I also enjoyed that I would steer people towards:
    • Mob Psycho 100
    • Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Ginga Eeiyu Densetsu) 1997 Version - wow, just wow. Must watch.
    • Death Parade - fascinating themes
    • Gosick
    • The Promised Neverland
    • Kingdom
I don't watch shonen preferentially over other anime, but the few I have enjoyed the most are:
    • Fairy Tail (especially the first few arcs)
    • One Piece
    • Naruto Shippuden

One Punchman comes from the same writer of Mob Psycho 100. They are both great and extremely similar. But I like One Punchman a little more.

We finished Naruto (Obito being my fav character), and we are all up to speed with One Piece.

I'm also almost up to speed with Food Wars. Really addictive.

Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventures can get to those levels. Some people don't like it. But my son and I can't stop LOLing with it. We are on season 5.

Every time I see @Ardacer avatar I LOL. Yare Yare...

I highly recommend Bleach! (but the first 14 episodes are not great, also feel free to skip the filler arcs).

@SineDave Regarding Last Exile: Fam of the Silver Wing kinda ruined it for me so can't recommend that you keep on with it, but the original certainly has a great deal of beauty to it. The OP was spectacular, while the tones and themes were all very much something of its era. SukaSuka is prettier but has a similar sort of feel somehow despite being a lot less subtle.

I'm kinda biased in thinking the early-though-mid 2000s had some excellent shows. Anyone else remember Texhnolyze? Yeesh, that one properly messed me up as a kid, but I looked forward to catching episodes nonetheless.

@nishan99 I refuse to acknowledge that anything after the end of the Aizen arc exists. I'm still properly pissed with the ending and the last couple arcs leading up to it, but I've been team
    IchiRuki
    since the beginning.

Food Wars is hilarious, but the fanservice is almost HotD levels at times haha. Anyone have recommendations for similar food-themed shows though? I'm a fan of stuff like it, Cooking Master Boy, and Isekai Shokudou. Stuff like One Piece and Toriko don't necessarily count :p

One other show I neglected to mention that I enjoyed a lot was The Disastrous Life of Saiki K on Netflix - just hilarious.

Closest we've come to a genuine masterpiece in the anime medium IMO.

EDIT: Realizing I've said this before but can't hurt to reiterate!

Is there any point to trying One Piece given that I have not even seen an episode? Aint there near 1000 now?

On season 3 of Food Wars and about halfway through JoJo's S3 - both are shows I find are better to watch in small bunches so as not get bogged down in their peculiarities. S3 of JoJo is a bit of a slog but I hear it elevates itself with the following seasons. Food Wars is just entertaining as hell, but @Lyander is right in that the fan service is a bit out there, but sometimes hilarious depending upon the character.

I dont think I had heard of Last Exile, will check that one out. I think I accidentally came across a spoiler for Promised Neverland (maybe) so Im not as interested in that one as I once was but will try it as maybe the Information I came across is something revealed early on.

Depression is insidious. Not familiar with him as a reviewer but I hope he finds his way.

Dang, I do hope things look up for him soon. Never heard of him despite having some knowledge of anime reviewers but yeah, depression is a proper bitch (not gonna apologise for that one) because of how often it's overlooked or underestimated— may he be surrounded by friends and family and never forget his worth.

I lost track of One Piece back when there were like fifty episodes out (LOL!) and only keep up via chats with my cousins since they're really into it, but speaking of anime with similar vibes does anyone else here remember Rave Master, the Hiro Mashima work that preceded Fairy Tale? That was a favourite back when I was a kid, though I admit being sad still that they never finished adapting the manga— it was a fairly typical shonen affair but the characters and worldbuilding wasn't bad at all for the time, and the soundtrack is full of bangers.

Currently rewatching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni on Netflix (not sure where else it's available for others) in preparation for the reboot. The animation has aged extremely poorly but that just kinda builds anticipation for ostensibly better production later on, and the hyper-moe look adds to the creep factor.

Has anyone caught that show about an RPG character that turned into a proper tank by dunking all her upgrade points into defence? Looking for something benign to relax to, not sure if that one's any fun. For reference, I absolutely adore stuff like Net-juu no Susume and hated that it got cancelled.

Yes. Maple is kind of cute as a character so it works for the story.

It was very annoying in Bleach when Ichigo just gained "poof" new powers after almost dying again. At least Goku died. Yusuke died and was reborn. Ichigo, nope more transformations than Frieza or the Mask for that matter.

He is an old-taku. His reviews really helped me to appreciate anime. He also went for the N.S.F.W. territory.

He hated "Violence Jack" by the way. I thought Violence Jack was meh.

What’s the name of that one? I’ve seen a few reviewers mention it and it seemed like it might be fun.

My “to watch” lists are getting longer and longer.

Has anyone tried Black Butler? I’ve started it but I’m not sold on it yet, wondering if I should stick around for a few more episodes.

Black Butler is a fave from a while back. Really liked the aesthetic so very nearly cosplayed Ciel back when I was younger (never got around to it cuz I felt I was never slim enough— unrealistic anime body standards FTW!). That aside the overall plot is pretty good, has swaths of classic revenge a la Count of Monte Cristo (both the novel and the very pretty 2004 anime) but with enough silliness to keep you chuckling along. The residents of the manor are quirky-interesting and it's a series that I think has aged fairly gracefully.

Could be nostalgia talking, of course, but either way the live action was a disappointment so just go with the anime haha. I do recommend the Count of Monte Cristo anime though— there are enough differences from the Alexandre Dumas source to make it worthwhile and the art really is grand.

As for the defence anime, I looked it up. The title is Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense and as much as I hate to admit it that's actually not too long-winded for modern LN titles.

All right then! I’ll stick with it and see where it goes. I agree that It’s a nice mix of tones which makes it an easy watch. Didn’t know there was a live action version. I tried the live action for Mob Psycho... that was a no for me.
Thanks for the title of that anime. I’ll see if one of my streaming services has it. You’re right, that’s not too bad a title for a light novel.

MAPPA has been doing an awesome job. I'm excited to see the rest of the anime.

I never really watched anime much until recently, lots of time to sit with my roommate and watch tv with this whole Covid thing.
So far watched Haikyu, Beastars, Evangelion, maybe some others too. Currently watching Gurran Lagan, and it's so good too.
