Arbitrary and unexplained banning on SBAF

Well, it started as as a WTF did I get banned, and shouldn't the system be transparent thing, and turned into concern for Merv and his hospitalised daughter.

Hoping that @Stuff Jones will, in the light of this, and in the wake of the very unpleasant verum experience that has really upset a lot of people just now, will step back. Sure, more transparency and informing the member can go in a suggestions thread some time in the future. Maybe bring it back in a few months.

 

Marv - I didn't read through the thread to see if there was an update on your daughter's condition, so I will send my well wishes in this post. Hope everything went well and that she is on the way to recovery!

 

@Stuff Jones does bring up a good point. If someone gets banned, there should be a proper process. I remember when I was banned, there is no warning. When you go to the site, it just says you are banned. Hopefully in whatever thread you can go back and view without logging in and maybe a mod added some info. I mean, it should be courtesy to send an email as to why and length of the ban. There should also be some kind of appeals process or some way to reach the admins and as least maybe apologize. I know when everyone liked the Schiit meme, a bunch of people were out very quick and hardly knew why. I mean, even a simple explanation can do, not asking for screenshots and a body of evidence here.

Sorry, I am turning this into more work for the mods/admins and making it more of a process, when I know it is much easier to use their better judgement to make quick decisions to not things get out of hand. These are just ideas and just throwing them forward for consideration."It would be nice if..." statements.

Please do not understand, I am not saying you have to be formal and follow protocols, just a simple "Hey, you were banned for 2 weeks for x reason." I don't think anyone wants this place to turn into HF. There are no rules, but when the line is crossed, you know it, we all know it. But sometimes that is not always clear to the one who crossed it.

Like I said, "It would be nice if..." I think is the ask. But we don't always get what we want...at least that is what the Stones taught me.

 

I kind of look at the temporary bans as a severe form of a “dislike” from a mod. Sometimes dislikes are explained and sometimes they aren’t.

For Friends, most times it’s because you’re being argumentative, stupid, disruptive or disrespectful. Straw-man arguments fall into a few of these categories.

I fully expect that some day I might put my foot in my mouth and get banned temporarily - ‘tis the nature of this place, and I also expect to laugh my ass of when it happens, becuase that’s how IRL serious it is. Would I like to know why, in order to avoid a ban in the future? Sure. But I wouldn’t expect that, nor would I ask for it when I came back, if it hadn’t been offered initially. Most times it’s pretty apparent why.

Seriously don’t sweat it and just carry on gabbing about audio and all the other things we chat about. It’s not an attack on your character, just a temporary system incompatibility that results in a BSOD and requires a reboot.

 

This isn’t the government, we’re not entitled to anything, including freedom of speech. I try not to be a dick so I don’t expect to get banned and if and when I do get banned, I’m pretty sure (deep down) I’ll know why. Not sure if all of this is necessary

 

I'm the last person to think a board like this should require more work but this baseball card style stat/attribute idea just rules. Feel like I'd get out there more with my opinions, and should I cross "the line" I at least get a rad page that describes precisely what kind of dipshit this forum thinks I am, which is more than any of us deserve anyway.

 

been banned like 3 times, last time no message given and the time before that it just said 'gone too far to the dark side'.

the lack of formal reason was cause for self-reflection of my own dum dum actions. it took me a while but getting banned made me realize my dum dum actions were a result of negative influences in my life, which I cut out completely. I am much happier now and less prone to dum dum actions as a result.

10/10 would get banned again

 

Can we bring back Executed over the Banned tag? Executed sounds much more funner.
